How To Get Better At Rapping
Nowadays everybody’s got talent, but hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard, right? This same rule applies to becoming a better rapper. If you want to get better at rapping then you need to lose the ego and get to work.
What I mean is that you need to be CONSTANTLY working on your craft. A lot of rappers out here will put out a song and think that it is going to be a hit, and the exact opposite happens. Then they start scratching their heads. “What did I do wrong? That was the best song I’ve ever wrote!” Your best song? You might not write your best song until you’ve written AT LEAST 100 songs.

This blog post applies to beginner rappers as well. If you are a seasoned rapper you should already know that you need to be working hard to polish up your skills. Please share this post if you think other rappers can benefit from this.
Anyways, before we proceed, I’d like to provide you with my course “Rap To The Basics” which details everything I’ve done in 2 years to improve my skills.
How To Get Better At Rapping
YOU NEED TO LOSE THE EGO Starting off as a rapper one of the first things you need to do is put your ego to the side. You need to realize that a lot of your favorite rappers obtained their skills by putting in a lot of years of hard work. It’s not possible to inherit the same skills when you are first getting started.
Start with the basics first and learn how to rap. I get it. Everything is fresh and brand new, and you are excited to release your music to the world. I am a perfect example:
My good friend, who is also a producer, told me I would need to record over 100 songs until I started getting comfortable behind the mic. He was right! Did I listen? Nope. I continued to release music to the world when I could have spent more time perfecting my craft.
Even though I have improved my skills a lot more since then, I might have given off a bad first impression to people who might have lost interest in me. Release music at your own risk, but if you want to get better at rapping LOSE THE EGO.
Can You Record A Great Verse?
Another problem that I see with beginning rappers is that they think they will have the best song because they wrote the best verse. This is another ego problem. I’m referring to rappers that hand-write their music before they record it into a microphone. To learn about other methods of rapping, click on this link.
We all have some sh*t to get off of our chests. You might think you have the deepest stuff to say that can impact a lot of people. None of that will matter though if you don’t SOUND good on a microphone.
This was the same problem that I was dealing with. I thought I had the most conceptual ideas to write. That didn’t matter when I recorded it though. I had trouble flowing to the beat, staying in pocket, adding emotion to my voice, etc. These are all skills rappers need to learn when they are beginning. To become a better rapper it is going to take time, effort, and patience. You really want this right?
DROP THE EGO AND YOU WILL BE READY TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP
Starting off as a rapper you have to get a grip with reality and understand you need to put in countless hours of practice to get better at rapping. If you are able to drop the ego, you are well on your way to the next step. Friends and family will tell you your music is dope because they don’t have it in them to put you down.
It is up to YOU to be your own critic. If you know your music needs work then put your head down and get to it! Tripping over your own ego will only set you back. I only say this because I learned this from first-hand experience! I hope you will avoid this mistake. If you do you will be well on your way to becoming a better rapper.
