3 Clever Ways Independent Rap Artists Are Making Money Online
It’s not rocket science to understand that we are now in a completely new age when it comes to the rap game and music industry. The music doesn’t need to be the best, having a record label is completely optional and the opportunity to do for self is ever present.
Now every artist has the opportunity to build their platform, regardless of skill level, it’s essentially a popularity contest. Am i personally glad about that? I think it’s a double edged sword, it definitely lowers the quality of the music that becomes ‘mainstream’. However this now gives the people who are willing to put in work the opportunity to be somebody in life.
Now whilst yes, we are able to do for self now, that is not something thats going to be possible without the financing to do so. The problem that i see, is artists are still trying to sell their music in 2016. I’m not saying don’t sell your music, i’m just saying the work you have to put in to get someone to buy a single drowns the reward. Imagine putting thousands into a music project only to sell 10 copies? Well that’s what many artists are facing now and even if they DID sell their music well, they would have to sell over one thousand singles to make $1000 after fee’s/royalties.
It just doesn’t work, the music economy is poor, very very poor. The real money in mainstream music is not the music sales, but in the product, endorsement and investment that building a well known brand around music can open to you.
Now, you’re not a mainstream artist and Effen Vodka or Ciroc aren’t about to hit you up to endorse you anytime soon. So how are YOU going to make money at your level? I’m going to share with you three ways i teach my clients to make money around their music. I wouldn’t usually share some of this information outside of my coaching program but i’m feeling extra generous today.
As a rap artist you spend a lot of time writing about your story. You know who else spends a lot of time writing stories? Authors. I’ve been teaching artists to create products like books and ebooks which they can sell for a much higher ticket than a poxy 99 cents for a single.
I know what you’re thinking. “I don’t know how to write a book, i don’t know how to get it published” etc. Just relax, all the information you need is only ever a google search away, it’s a lot easier than you think, you write it up in Word, you make sure it’s all on point then you send it out to somebody to format it for you. Nice and easy.
This one definitely works for artists because the skill-set of writing lyrics almost flawlessly translates into authoring especially for rappers who tell stories. It’s very different, but also very similar depending on how you look at it.

Another great way that artists are making money online is through t shirts. Now i know you’re thinking well duh, everybody knows that! Yes they do, but they’re doing it wrong. The mistake artists make is they try to sell their branded clothing with their logo’s and names on it which limits it’s audience. You can only sell that stuff to people who like your music, or even know about it.
However, there is real money to be made by making catchphrase and meme t shirts. An example would be making a t-shirt with a drum machine on the front that says ‘i’m a producer’. People love to let the world know what they’re passionate about. If you created a great quality t-shirt with that on the front and ran a Facebook Ad strictly to producers, you can make thousands! Can you think of any other t-shirts that people couldn’t resist buying? If so, get to it, theres a lot of money there!
There are artists out there making thousands a month off youtube. They create entertaining content on Youtube and build their personal brand on there attracting thousands of people who like them for them. Throw some ads and an ever increasing subscriber base into the mix and you’re looking at serious money, that’s before you even advertise your own stuff, like your music, your new book and your your t-shirts *hint hint*
Obviously you’re not going to be able to build that overnight but it’s something you can focus on building alongside what you do already, it might only take a couple of hours a week to create genius content that spreads far and fast. Don’t know until you try.
Now these aren’t the most conventional ideas, just in the sense of how much you want to focus on music, but what you must understand is how hard you have to work to make money off the music its self. If you make money full stop, you can do whatever you want with music. Do this smartly with a strategy, stop running around ‘trying to get on.’
